Some dancing for Social Justice – September 14, Jigsaw, Dublin

The Latin America Solidarity Centre is a membership-based social justice organisation in Dublin with a focus on development and human rights issues in Latin America and Ireland. They run educational and cultural events, development education courses, and some campaigns. Currently they are focussing on women defenders against extractive industries, and are gearing up to launch a campaign against Ireland’s importation of coal from Colombia’s Cerrejón open-cast coal mine, notorious for human rights abuses.

They are having a fundraising event which will take place on Friday 14th September in Jigsaw. As well as live music, a DJ and dancing, some refreshments, there will be an exhibition on women human rights and environmental defenders, and a stall with information about LASC.

Clare fiddle player Tola Custy is no stranger to the music scene in Ireland and further-away places. Whilst collaborating and working with other musicians are his normal fields of exploration tonight he is putting on a rare solo show

Carlinhos Cruz is a singer and song-writer, who started playing music aged 10 taking up the sounds and rhythms of the bustling city of São Paulo in Brazil where he comes from. Influenced by the diversity and textures of contemporary Brazilian music his music is a fusion of traditional Brazilian folk and haunting melodies that speak of the vivacity and complexity of contemporary living.

Different Rhythms will be DJing some Latin American dance tunes!!
