The first trip to Croke Park that I remember making was in 1975, I’m pretty sure my first visit was before that but I have a vivid recollection of being in my Nans house when Dublin played Galway in the 1974 all Ireland final. My mam and I went to Whitehall and listened to the game on the radio while my Dad and three older brothers trooped to Croke Park and the hill to watch the “boys in blue”.
Our journeys have continued through thick and thin through barren years and many victories. We travelled all over Ireland, seeing cities we’d never seen and hanging out in car parks we had never dreamed of. It has been a family bond and while recent years have been mainly winning ones we still remember those days of trying to win a Leinster title.
Most of the contributors to this book are talking of games I’ve been to. They recall frees and penalties I felt like I had kicked. Thankfully most of these games are victories, many of them coming after a lot of defeats. What’s good about these stories is that some background is given. Whether that is around team selection or manager or coaching technique. It’s not just “yeah I was great that day” but a bit more in-depth.
