Across the road from the site where the Viking man landed in Dublin is the Olympia Theatre. Wood Quay was the location that late in the last century was redeveloped. In Temple Bar where the theatre is located on its escorts is the Noseman Bar named as a nod to that time.
Wardruna felt like they were coming “home” tonight and while that was a younger in cheek remark it was a nod from the band to that time. This isn’t a band that views the old days are better. It is a band that pays reverence to their history and lineage. The instruments have history and the sound is one of tribalism. This is Lankum and Clannad mixed into a Viking world.
The packed out Olympia theatre crowd all lapped it up. It was atmospheric, moody and enthralling.
Lights were minimal, noise was maximum but not from the audience. We were all enthralled by what was on offer and soaking in the smoky demeanour with great vigour.
