The Wedding present
Live Whelans
Sept 28
4 decades of a band can’t be right? That’s the sort of thing that stadium rock brings on. Flash guitars, lavish songs and 40 years of rock’n’roll. The Wedding Present are the understated kings of fast jangly guitar pop tunes. Semi legendary is their title but 40 years later? Surely that can’t be right.
Of course it is. I remember getting a postcard from David Gedge after I wrote to the band saying I thought they were great. His phone number was on it so I called him up. We chatted and I went to see them in London. I’m guessing those stories continued through the years. The semi legendary accessable kings of jangly pop.
After all this time Gedge is the only sole member remaining. At times it can be looked the Dave Gedge all stars but when they go through their back catalogue in reverse chronological order tonight all order is resumed.
The sound was crisp, the songs are class and Gedge himself was in great spirits. Still no encores but as they finished the set with their first ever released song I raised a fist in honour of that phone call and marvelled in how good the wedding present have been down through the years.
