Record Store Day is a strange beast. Like any ‘innovation’ in the music scene it has been hijacked as a way of increasing revenue for labels which is admirable if it’s just the smaller labels who need the money to survive. I’ve lost interest in it in recent years as large labels now release 2collectors items2 on vinyl taking up valuable limited pressing plant time as well as eating into the indies ability to sell. Southern Lord always seem to have a few interesting things on the go for Record Store Day and one such release was a new compilation from San Diego hardcore punk band, and post-hardcore pioneers Heroin. Thankfully the label will be releasing a non-RSD version on LP and digitally on 28th July. Heroin were a short lived but very influential San Diego hardcore band.
Heroin – Discography is both a swan song to the outside world and a love letter to the underground punk/hardcore community. This collection of recordings from the 90’s contains all of the out of print 7”s and 12”s, compilation tracks, as well as the session the band recorded at the infamous Inner Ear Studios in Washington, DC, (now relocated) and never heard before unreleased songs.
The double LP Gatefold “tip on” jacket is beautifully packaged with a special zine with tons of photos and liner notes by Sonny Kay and is out NOW and available from your favourite record stores and here
