Days and Days

A story about Sunderland’s Leatherface and the ties that bind

Chris MacDonald

For those of us reading this and who get the real connection that music can bring to our lives let me tell you I’m with you. This book is for those that get chills when the needle hits a specific record or when a track plays in the distance that brings back a moment in time. When a chord strikes and you are struck with the magic of it and returns you to the first time you heard it.

For many Leatherface has this connection and Chris MacDonald does a great job in passing on that enthusiasm. The band meant more to him than just a collection of songs and through these pages you can sense the sense of fandom that MacDonald has.

The story is a recollection of a trip that Canadian native MacDonald made with his friend Jason Dwyer to England, Scotland, and through both lines of our island of Ireland. It was a trip that 2 friends made, discovering places that had meaning to them. One such place was Sunderland where they met up with members of Leatherface. This is our punk rock, people who make and create this wonderful art are people whose everyday lives intersect with ours. We are one and that’s the way we want it.

The book is 2 stories in one. One part tale of friendship as two people make their way round the UK and Ireland on a budget and most importantly for many readers is also the story of Leatherface in small anecdotes.

It’s not a history of the band or their lives. That can be a different memoir. It has pieces from people in and around the band and every word is coated in respect and reverence for a band tinged with grief and sadness and still gives me goose bumps at even the mention of the name.

MacDonald sums up the feel for Leatherface and the atmosphere around their music perfectly. I didn’t need to read about his trip to Uk and Ireland but was delighted to see Dublin briefly written about in the same book as the homage to Frankie and the rest of the band.
