Sunderland 3 piece Ugly Criers set out on an unlikely musical journey.
Luke, Nina and Greg are three friends who got together as people to play heartfelt punk rock songs. These songs are about parenting, relationships and not necessarily about changing the world. But in a funny way they are, Ugly Crier are part of a community that celebrates the normalcy of life and sing about the highs and lows of our journey through this world.
Being a three piece brings less complications in sound and this is three people bashing away on their instruments looking for a way through the song while Greg spurts the words in his strong north eastern accent. Greg’s previous recorded output is many and varied including Former Cell Mates, Bear Trade and Medictation. This is a singer with history but like the lower league star footballer has never made it to the Premiership for some reason. I can’t quite fathom it but for now his bands are jewels for a few.
There are bits that remind me of Against Me, bashing guitars and driving bass and drums with Greg’s vocals counteracting at times what’s happening.
Little rocket records keeps finding these gems, this time around they are celebrating one of their local acts, fellow north eastern punks.
